Koror, Palau — Governor Stevenson A. Joseph, Chair of the 28th Micronesian Islands Forum (MIF), joined regional heads of state in Koror, Palau, for the historic signing of an agreement establishing Pohnpei as the host location for the new Asian Development Bank (ADB) North Pacific Subregional Office. The landmark agreement was officially signed by the President of the Federated States of Micronesia, H.E. Wesley W. Simina, alongside ADB President Masato Kanda.
The ceremony, held at the Ngarachamayong Cultural Center, highlighted the strength of Micronesian unity and national leadership. The successful hosting arrangement was made possible through the dedicated efforts of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) National Government, alongside the strong backing of the Republic of the Marshall Islands and the Republic of Palau, whose mutual support reflects a shared commitment to solidarity across the North Pacific.
During the event, FSM President Wesley W. Simina turned to acknowledge Governor Joseph prior to signing the agreement alongside ADB President Masato Kanda. In response, President Kanda stood to greet Governor Joseph, expressing ADB’s gratitude to Pohnpei State for serving as the host site.
While physically located in Pohnpei, the office is established to serve all three North Pacific nations equally, embodying the true spirit of Pacific regionalism and collective progress.
FSM national leadership was fundamental in facilitating this milestone, which further enhances Pohnpei’s role as a subregional administrative center location alongside existing regional presences like the One UN Office.
According to official remarks delivered by ADB President Masato Kanda, ADB’s active portfolio in the North Pacific has expanded from four operations valued at $39 million in 2011 to 22 active projects totaling approximately $320 million today. Establishing a dedicated office in the region aims to assist with local coordination, technical assistance, and crisis response over the long term.
Preparations are underway to make the ADB North Pacific Subregional Office operational in due course, following standard administrative setups.
