President Simina and UN Deputy Secretary-General discuss FSM priorities

September 5, 2026 KOROR, Palau — His Excellency Wesley W. Simina, President of the Federated States of Micronesia, met with United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed on the margins of the 55th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting in Palau.
President Simina expressed appreciation for the United Nations’ partnership with the North Pacific, highlighting the UN Multi-Country Office as an important channel for closer regional engagement. He also reaffirmed the FSM’s commitment to establishing a permanent “One UN House” in the FSM.
Discussions focused on priorities affecting communities across the FSM, including climate resilience and access to development and climate finance. The two leaders also discussed the selection of the next United Nations Secretary-General and Deputy Secretary-General Mohammed’s planned visit to the FSM later this year. President Simina also called for the designation of a UN Special Representative on Climate Change to strengthen global attention and action on the vulnerabilities facing island nations.
