Yap, FSM – Yesterday, September 7, the Reey Conservation Area–Reey shared highlights from the communities of Mal’ay and Thabeth, who reaffirmed and strengthened their commitment to sustainably managing the Reey Resources Management Area through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with OneReef on September 6, 2026, marking another important step in strengthening community-led conservation and resource management efforts in the Reey Conservation Area.

The agreement reflects a shared commitment among community members, traditional leaders, and conservation partners to protect the area’s natural resources while safeguarding the traditional way of life that communities depend on.

The MOU also highlights the importance of collaboration in responding to growing environmental changes and challenges affecting local resources.

Founding member of the Reey program, Mr. John Gilsowuth, emphasized the importance of continued community involvement in managing and protecting natural resources.

“Community efforts such as our resource management program are important, especially with all the changes happening in our environment today,” Gilsowuth said.

“We are thankful for all the support from our traditional leadership, community members, and friends near and far. Thank you, OneReef, and everyone for your continued collaboration and support,” he added.

The signing of the MOU represents Mal’ay and Thabeth’s continued commitment to work with OneReef and other partners to strengthen sustainable resource management.

Through community-led conservation, the communities aim to protect their environment and natural resources for current and future generations while maintaining the cultural practices and way of life that remain central to their communities.
