Pohnpei—Pohnpei’s three public high schools have received vocational equipment through a World Bank-financed project to expand practical training and prepare students for employment and further education.
According to a September 25 press release from the FSM Department of Finance and Administration, the handover at Pohnpei Island Central School included equipment for PICS, Nanpei Memorial High School, and Madolenihmw High School.
The Skills and Employability Enhancement Project combines equipment with 18 new career and technical education curricula, teacher development, and improvements to training facilities.
A four-year teaching model is being piloted this school year in Pohnpei, Kosrae, and Yap. Students begin exploring trades in Grade 9 and develop their skills throughout high school.
President Wesley Simina delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the need for skilled workers and several pathways for young people to succeed.
The National Department of Education implements the project across all four states. It continues through June 2027.
