FSM—The eighth annual Micronesia Clean Up Day observance included an environmental fair, recognition of schools and partner organizations, and a video featuring religious leaders discussing environmental protection, according to a release provided by the FSM Department of Environment, Climate Change, and Emergency Management (DECEM).
This year’s national government activities encouraged public participation in efforts toward “Clean Islands for Healthier Communities in the FSM.”
At an environmental fair on September 14, organizers recognized school environmental clubs, government environmental partners, and the 2026 FSM Environmental Youth Champion for their efforts to promote environmental protection.
The ambassadors from Australia, Japan, and China attended the fair. Fijian artist Warwick Marlow also attended.
Display booths featured waste materials turned into useful items, promoting the “3Rs” of reducing, reusing, and recycling.
The schools recognized were Our Lady of Mercy High School, Pohnpei Catholic School, Pohnpei Island Central School, and the College of Micronesia-FSM. Other recipients included the Pacific Community, Catholic Relief Services, JICA Micronesia, Ritsumeikan University students, and SGI with Noriko Lopez.
DECEM Secretary Yatilman also presented Xavier Gilsowuth of Yap with the 2026 FSM Environmental Youth Champion award.
As part of the observance, Micronesian Productions developed a video featuring religious leaders responding to the question, “What does the bible teach about protecting the environment?”
Father Francis X. Hezel, Pastor Herman Sado, and Pastor Perry Killion contributed to the video.
The Micronesia Clean Up Day Planning Committee thanked the participants and, on behalf of Secretary Yatilman, encouraged the public to join efforts to protect the environment and keep FSM communities clean.
