YAP, FSM — A five-member health team provided screenings and health education to 81 people on Fais during a four-day outreach focused on non-communicable diseases and preventive care, according to a release from the Yap State Government.

The September 14–17 outreach reached 46 women and 35 men, including 14 homebound patients who received screening services.

The team included representatives of the Diabetes, Tobacco, and Cancer programs, JICA, and COM-CRE. The outreach was sponsored by the Waab Healthy Lifestyle Coalition, a nonprofit organization that works with the Yap NCD Program.

Health workers conducted cardiovascular disease risk assessments, including reviews of personal and family histories of high blood pressure, diabetes, and kidney disease. Participants received blood pressure and blood sugar testing as well as height and weight measurements used to calculate body mass index.

The assessments also covered tobacco and alcohol use and dietary habits, including consumption of fiber, sugary drinks, salt, and high-fat foods.

Cervical cancer prevention and screening were also part of the outreach. Four students received their second dose of the Human Papillomavirus vaccine, while health workers followed up with women who had previously undergone HPV primary screening to provide results and information about their next screenings.

The team also compiled a list of women between 30 and 65 who had not yet received HPV screening to assist with future cervical cancer screening efforts on Fais.

According to the release, health workers established a screening station outdoors and invited community members to use the free services during the visit.

The Yap Comprehensive Cancer Control Program thanked Fais Dispensary Health Assistants Alfonso and Barbara for assisting with the outreach and the Fais community for supporting the visiting team.

The outreach is part of continuing efforts by the Yap NCD Program and partner organizations to expand preventive health services and awareness of non-communicable diseases in Yap State.
