YAP, FSM — Forty-five people received free health screenings at Yap State Hospital during a World Heart Day observance organized by the Public Health Non-Communicable Diseases Program, according to a release from the Yap State Government.
The September 29 event was held from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. to raise awareness about cardiovascular diseases, including heart disease and stroke, and encourage preventive health measures.
Community members and hospital staff received weight and height measurements, body mass index calculations, blood pressure checks, blood sugar screenings, and health education.
Participants were provided information about reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease through measures including avoiding tobacco, reducing salt intake, eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and limiting alcohol consumption.
The NCD Program also encouraged routine blood pressure and blood sugar screening, noting that hypertension and diabetes can develop without noticeable symptoms.
The theme for World Heart Day 2026 was “Don’t Miss a Beat,” emphasizing preventive measures and awareness of signs and symptoms that may require medical attention.
People whose screening results indicated a need for additional evaluation were referred to the NCD Clinic for follow-up care, with appointments arranged when necessary.
The program also encouraged people previously diagnosed with high blood pressure, diabetes, or other non-communicable diseases to maintain regular follow-up care through the clinic.
