NEW YORK — FSM Vice President Aren B. Palik called for climate financing that is accessible and predictable for Small Island Developing States, telling a high-level event in New York that climate resilience and the transition away from imported fossil fuels are inseparable for island nations.

Palik spoke during the High-Level Event on Climate Action and the Just Transition, held on the margins of the 81st United Nations General Assembly.

He pointed to FSM investments in renewable energy and energy security, along with efforts involving coastal protection, food and water security, and community-led climate resilience.

“For Micronesia, climate change and just energy transition are not separate agendas. They are the same struggle for survival,” Palik said. “Our resilience depends on breaking our dependence on imported fossil fuels, and our energy transition is only just if it strengthens our communities and protects our islands.”

Palik called for climate financing, including adaptation funding, that is accessible, predictable, and responsive to the particular vulnerabilities faced by Small Island Developing States.

He said that while the FSM is pursuing climate and energy initiatives domestically, greater international support is needed to ensure that financing, technology, and capacity-building reach island communities on the front lines of climate change.
