YAP, FSM — The number of documented cases in Yap’s diarrheal disease outbreak has reached 228, although daily case counts have remained in the low single digits since mid-September, according to a release from the Yap State Government.
As of September 23, Yap Memorial Hospital reported three pediatric patients who had recently presented to the Outpatient Department with diarrheal illness. The patients were two 1-year-olds and one 15-year-old. One of the 1-year-old patients was admitted for further treatment.
Two pediatric patients remained hospitalized at the time of the report. Since the outbreak began, 12 patients have been admitted to the hospital, with 10 subsequently discharged following treatment.
No new outpatient hydration cases were reported.
Laboratory testing continues to identify several pathogens among patients. Rotavirus remains the predominant pathogen detected, while Sapovirus, E. coli, Giardia, Salmonella, and Adenovirus have also been found.
Recent testing detected Adenovirus in a 1-year-old girl who was also infected with Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC).
According to the release, health authorities have found co-infections involving multiple enteric pathogens among a majority of patients tested.
The latest epidemiological data show a decline in reported cases, with daily case counts remaining in the low single digits since mid-September. Health authorities said the trend indicates the outbreak is showing signs of tapering off.
Authorities continue to monitor the outbreak and are encouraging residents to practice proper hand hygiene and safe food and water practices to reduce the spread of diarrheal disease.
