Yap—Community concerns about proposed military projects in Yap were among the subjects discussed when Governor Francis Itimai and members of his cabinet met with visiting U.S. diplomatic and military representatives on September 28.

According to a September 30 release from the Yap State Government, the delegation included U.S. Deputy Chief of Mission Andrew J. Wylie and Joint Task Force–Micronesia Commander Admiral Lasky. The meeting took place in the Governor’s Conference Room.

Following introductions, Itimai invited YUMO Task Force Chairman Thomas G. Tun to address community concerns and questions about the proposed projects.

The release said Lasky told participants he was working with the U.S. Embassy and the YUMO Task Force to address those concerns. He also announced plans to hold smaller meetings within communities to provide more information and answer questions about the projects.

The announcement did not identify the specific concerns raised, describe the projects discussed, or provide dates and locations for the planned community meetings.

Itimai welcomed the visiting representatives and offered assistance during their stay. The discussion brought together U.S. representatives, state officials, and task force members to consider questions surrounding the proposed military projects.

Other participants included Planning and Budget Director Julius Liyon Tun, Resources and Development Director Bernard Gorong, Health Services Director Theo Thinnifel, Assistant Attorney General Antonio Barinisavu, and Acting Youth and Civic Affairs Director John W.K. Fillmed. Staff from those offices and the YUMO Task Force also attended.
