Pei Lapalap, Pohnpei — Governor Stevenson A. Joseph officially assumed the Chairmanship of the 28th Micronesian Islands Forum (MIF) during its opening ceremony in Pohnpei, taking over leadership of the regional body from President Hilda Heine of the Republic of the Marshall Islands.
The forum gathers regional heads of state, governors, and delegations from across the Pacific, including leaders from the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of Palau, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Republic of Nauru, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the FSM states.
In his opening address to executive leaders, diplomatic corps members, international development partners, and community stakeholders, Governor Joseph emphasized a shift from rhetoric to measurable outcomes.
“As we deliberate on the common issues we share, let’s focus and find solutions—tangible, practical solutions,” Governor Joseph stated. “And most importantly, put these solutions into action.”
Addressing this year’s theme, “Promote healthy communities, open doors to learning,” Governor Joseph challenged leaders to overhaul existing public frameworks rather than accepting the status quo.
Key Priorities Highlighted in Executive Address:
Preventative Healthcare Systems:
Calling Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) a crisis threatening regional stability, Governor Joseph urged a shift from reactive care and costly off-island medical referrals toward preventative investments, including clean water infrastructure, localized nutrition, and early screening programs.
Targeted Vocational & Technical Education:
The Governor urged regional educational institutions to align training directly with local market demand. Priorities include technical trades, sustainable agriculture, mechanics, maritime skills, and technology to retain local talent and strengthen domestic economies.
Integrated Climate Resilience:
Highlighting the immediate threats of El Niño cycles, drought, and sea-level rise, Governor Joseph stated that climate adaptation must be standard criteria across all future public infrastructure projects, budgets, and municipal development planning.
The 28th MIF will continue sessions throughout the week in Pohnpei, focusing on multilateral agreements, regional security, trade, and sustainable development strategies.
