CHUUK, FSM — Australia has launched a solar electrification project on Etten in Chuuk that will provide new electricity connections to households and community facilities, according to a post by the Australian Embassy to the FSM.
Australian Ambassador Jenny Grant launched the project with Chuuk Governor Alex Narruhn, Chuuk Public Utilities Corporation CEO Kembo Mida, and representatives of implementation partners the Pacific Community and Utiligence.
The project will install a solar mini-grid and battery energy storage system and provide household wiring and power connections. Schools, the island dispensary, and church will also be connected to the new system, according to the Embassy.
The Facebook post did not provide the project’s cost, generating capacity, number of households expected to receive electricity, or anticipated completion date.
Narruhn thanked the Australian Government for funding the project and said access to electricity would create new opportunities for Etten residents and support future development.
“We, the people of Chuuk and Etten, will support the completion of this project in whatever way we can,” Narruhn said.
Grant said reliable electricity would have practical effects on daily life for Etten families.
“For many families in Etten, reliable electricity will transform everyday life in ways both large and small. It will mean lights in homes at night, allowing children to study and families to spend more time together. It will mean safer homes and safer public spaces,” Grant said.
According to the Embassy, the project is intended both to improve access to electricity and to help the community adapt to climate change through the use of renewable energy.
