KOSRAE, FSM — An Australian-funded project in Utwe is providing youth and women with opportunities in aquaculture, food processing, and preservation, according to a post by the Australian Embassy to the FSM.
Australian Ambassador Jenny Grant and Senior Program Manager Roan Cabacungan recently visited the completed project, which was supported through Australia’s Direct Aid Program.
Project Manager Krystle Melander said the initiative provides opportunities for youth and women in Utwe to participate in both onshore and offshore coastal aquaculture.
Participants are also learning food preservation and processing techniques, including drying fish, dehydrating taro and cassava, and producing flour for household use and baking.
“These techniques help strengthen food security, generate income, and support sustainable livelihoods for families in the community,” Grant said.
According to the Embassy, the Utwe Youth Group has previously carried out several projects supported through Australia’s Direct Aid Program, with a focus on economic opportunities for youth and women.
The Direct Aid Program provides Australian funding for small-scale community projects in the FSM.
