CHUUK, FSM — Australia will fund repairs to water and sanitation facilities at two schools on Weno damaged by Typhoon Sinlaku as part of a broader AUD 2.1 million investment in school water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities across the FSM, according to a post by the Australian Embassy to the FSM.
Australian Ambassador Jenny Grant visited Iras Demo Elementary School, where she met with Acting Vice Principal Sinia Sainash and inspected areas where gutters and water tanks damaged during the typhoon are scheduled to be rehabilitated.
The work will be carried out in partnership with UNICEF and the Chuuk Education Directorate. According to the Embassy, the two schools were among those hardest hit on Weno.
The Embassy post did not identify the second school or specify how much of the AUD 2.1 million FSM-wide investment would be spent on the work in Chuuk.
“This important recovery work rehabilitating water and sanitation infrastructure destroyed in the typhoon will help Chuuk’s children study in safer and more hygienic spaces,” Grant said.
The project will also support repairs to school toilet and handwashing facilities and provide menstrual hygiene kits for girls.
Grant was accompanied by Australian Embassy Second Secretary Josh Critchley-Evans and Cory Kustin of UNICEF. She also met with Chuuk Education Directorate representatives Eleanor Bisalen, Jayvina Assito, and Deanna Aizawa, who conducted assessments to identify the schools considered most vulnerable.
The AUD 2.1 million program supports water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities at schools across the FSM, according to the Embassy.
