POHNPEI — Australian Ambassador Grant visited Pohnpei’s National Weather Service Office, where staff demonstrated Australian-funded climate monitoring tools and released a weather balloon used to collect atmospheric data.
According to a Facebook post from the Australian Embassy to the FSM, the meteorological team showcased software provided through the Australian Government-funded Climate and Oceans Support Program in the Pacific, known as COSPPac.
The program supports Pacific national meteorological and hydrological services, along with land and survey departments, by developing data, tools and technical skills.
During the visit, Grant also received a briefing on a Continuous Global Positioning System donated by Australia. The system measures tectonic plate movements and operates alongside the tide gauge at Pohnpei Port.
The weather balloon release demonstrated another aspect of the office’s work, gathering atmospheric information to support forecasting and monitoring.
“Thank you to the team for sharing the important information and insights that help us better understand our weather conditions,” Grant said. “The information you provide is essential to keeping our communities informed and prepared.”
The embassy reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to working with the FSM and other Pacific countries to make climate and ocean services accessible, inclusive and culturally relevant.
