Australian grant supports greenhouses for 10 Kosrae families

KOSRAE — Ten families in Kosrae will receive mini greenhouse starter kits through a $19,600 Australian-funded project aimed at improving access to fresh vegetables and reducing household food costs.

Australian Ambassador Grant visited a Lelu Farmers Association mini greenhouse supported through Australia’s Direct Aid Program’s 2025–2026 funding round, according to a Facebook post from the Australian Embassy to the FSM.

The project will assist households including retirees, people with disabilities, single female-headed households and families experiencing financial hardship.

It builds on earlier Direct Aid Program greenhouse projects first established in 2017. The embassy reported that more than 25 family greenhouses have already been constructed and that a growing number of households are waiting to participate.

By helping families grow vegetables locally, the initiative aims to improve nutrition, reduce reliance on imported produce and strengthen food security. The embassy said the project also supports climate resilience and community-led development.

“By supporting households to grow their own food, we are helping improve food security, strengthen resilience, and create opportunities for people to provide for their families,” Grant said.

Grant also welcomed the continued success of the earlier greenhouses and the strong community demand for the initiative.

The embassy reaffirmed Australia’s support for partnerships with local organizations that improve livelihoods through practical community projects.
