President Simina and Deputy Secretary Landau reaffirm strength of FSM–U.S. partnership

WENO, Chuuk — His Excellency Wesley W. Simina, President of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), held a bilateral meeting with United States Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, reaffirming the enduring FSM–U.S. partnership and the mutual respect that underpins the two countries’ unique relationship under the Compact of Free Association.

The two discussed the United States’ announcement of an additional $96 million for Typhoon Sinlaku recovery and reconstruction, expected to support the rebuilding of approximately 700 homes and repairs to around 1,000 buildings, including schools, hospitals, and other essential facilities. The U.S. delegation noted the unprecedented pace of the response and reconstruction effort.

The President also addressed concern over recent inaccurate public commentary regarding the FSM’s political status. Deputy Secretary Landau reaffirmed the U.S.’s respect for the sovereignty of the FSM, while President Simina underscored the importance of that sovereignty and expressed appreciation for the continued mutual respect shown by both partners.

President Simina raised infrastructure and implementation challenges under the Compact and welcomed progress on the Chuuk State Hospital project.

The two also discussed defense site projects in Yap, with President Simina noting positive discussions with Yap State leadership and its commitment to moving the projects forward.

President Simina thanked the United States Coast Guard for its continued search and rescue support and welcomed further opportunities for assistance in disaster response, including the ongoing Typhoon Sinlaku response and recovery.
